Mulaka has a bit of something for everyone, and I mean that in the most sincere fashion. There’s a ton of exploration and adventure, good fighting combo work, and plenty of collectibles for the thorough player to discover. The cut scenes and explanations give a lot of background and insight to the tales of the Tarahumara people, but they can be easily skipped if you really are just intent on the fighting and framework. And, as always, you can take it leisurely, one foot in front of the other, or at the speed of wind, sprinting about with reckless abandon. In all cases, this is a fantastic tale that really did a ton for me in terms of engagement and enjoyment. A perfect blend of storytelling and gameplay, Mulaka has certainly won itself a place in my heart, and I encourage others to seek it out as well.

Lienzo has excellently implemented their cultural source material into a video game, without sacrificing the video game. Set in an original world Mulaka would still be a fun game, but the love and creativity brought about by the Tarahumara culture permeates the game in a way that makes it something truly special. While the game isn’t perfect, its ability to preserve a culture through an active medium while still being an enjoyable gaming experience is a trend I hope Lienzo and other are able to continue in the future.

For anyone looking to scratch that nagging Okami itch, even if it never quite reaches the same heights, you’re going to have a good time here. It may feel a tad familiar, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes, it’s just great to lose yourself in a goofy world for a bit.

If you can get past the somewhat janky visuals and combat, you will find a decent action-adventure game that does an excellent job exposing new people to an intriguing culture and mythology. If you are a fan of games that infuse history or different mythologies into the experience and have not heard of the Tarahumara people, Mulaka is definitely worth checking out. It is vital to preserve smaller and somewhat ignored cultures through things like storytelling, so I’m glad Lienzo choose to do so for the Tarahumara people in an interactive way with Mulaka.

Mulaka is a simple game at heart with a lot of familiar traits. The open, low-poly landscapes and characters are reminiscent of Journey. The combat and puzzle elements are similar to Breath of the Wild and Okami. But thanks to the specific Tarahumara setting and characters, Mulaka still manages to have a personality and feel all its own. It offers an appealingly unique setting that makes it something more than a typical adventure game.

Mulaka’s strength as a game comes from the painstaking effort that has been made to sufficiently portray the culture of the Tarahumara people, and, as such, there is much joy to be found in exploring the sun-baked region and learning from those that inhabit it. Endure the opening tutorial area, and, once the game starts to open up, it’s easy to become lost in its world, even with the flaws that its combat system carries. That’s not problematic enough to derail the whole experience, especially for those that will see value in the chance to learn about another culture.

Giving life to Mexican legends, Mulaka tells the unique journey of the titled shaman in the form as an action-adventure game. Despite its simple structure and loose combat, it still manages to awe thanks to its pleasant art style and superb soundtrack.

Unfortunately lacks the originality it so desperately needs to really stand out from the pack. Even though the art style is striking and bold, combined with an inventive cultural focus, the gameplay and overall design weigh it down to be little more than a passable action adventure title.

Again, if the rest of Mulaka were good, those are the sort of complaints you could overlook or even explain away. Instead, they add on to the frustration you’ll feel from the wonky combat, and take away from a game that, from an aesthetic perspective, might have otherwise had a lot going for it. It’s still great to have these kinds of stories told, but it’s hard not to wish that such a fresh and unique setting had a fresh and unique game to go with it.

Mulaka offers a truly intriguing insight into the culture and mythology of the Tarahumara people, but is let down by some frustrating gameplay issues. Exploring and puzzle solving is a simple but enjoyable affair, and there are elements of the combat system that show real promise, but some oversights surrounding the game’s pacing and controls leave quite a lot to be desired. If you’re interested enough in learning about the topic it wouldn’t be unwise to give the game a go despite its flaws, but players looking purely for great gameplay might want to ponder over it a little longer.
