Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider is a fantastic game. It reminds you of how those old SNES and Genesis games were, enhanced with plenty of quality of life elements. If all your side scrolling melee retro games got together, and created a game in the lab of a maniacal government, it would be this. If you love retro 16-bit action games, you won't regret this. Cyber ninja vanish. 

Vengeful Guardian Moonrider is such an interesting game to release in 2023. It may go under many people’s radar, but this is an awesome experience despite its high difficulty. There is a surprising amount of game here, and the Mega Man homages are incorporated wonderfully, as they are clearly inspired but also unique in its own way.

Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider is an absolute triumph in 'neo-retro' game design. It boasts fluid combat with plenty of variety in environmental and enemy design and an art style that looks like it beamed straight over from the early '90s. While its overall short length might be a bit of a sticking point for some, those looking for an action title that is not only a fantastic experience but also feels like an authentically retro one will find this to be an absolute no-brainer. It's straight up one of the coolest games to kickstart 2023.

Il paradosso è che proprio il suo più grande punto di forza è la sua maggiore debolezza, perché Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider sembra disinteressato a parlare a un pubblico moderno, mirando esclusivamente a coloro che sono in grado di comprendere e apprezzare le sue numerose fonti. Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider is a 2D sidescrolling game that pays homage to the 16-bit era of action games. It’s certainly nailed the retro challenge of games from the Sega Genesis/MegaDrive and Super Nintendo Entertainment System era, as well as their look and feel. You can complete the game in around 2-3 hours at most, depending on your experience with 2D action games like this one, but if you want to 100% the game, you’ll need to get good to obtain an S rank on every stage. Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider is out tomorrow on PlayStation 5 with a $16.99 asking price.

Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider stands out among the pack of games looking to capture that 16-bit nostalgia. It is not just an art style. There are so many pieces that go into making a modern retro game and JoyMasher continues to prove they are better at it than most. I highly recommend this game and don’t let it slip through the cracks. It is definitely one of the better ones available.

This game was just the greatest cup of coffee for me to help start the new year. Last year started with a bang when I had the pleasure of playing Infernax, and 2023 got off to a great start as well with Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider. It’s not terribly involved, the storyline is a bit heavy handed, and you need to figure out how it handles, but it’s exactly what it needs to be. I can and will return to this game in the future when I want to burn through a great action platformer with excellent progression. Oh, and you can bet your ass I’ll be looking forward to future content, though this game needs none. Fans of the 16 bit era should absolutely give this a try, and see for themselves what being vengeance really feels like.

I loved Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider, but it won’t be for everyone. It’s a must-play for 2D action platform veterans. Especially those that value speedrunning. The 80s inspirations hit all the right nostalgia buttons for me. It might look a little generic on the surface, but anyone who gives Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider their time, will find a tight action platformer, with lots of unique nuance. If you’re at all curious, don’t hesitate to pick it up.

En esta ocasión Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider es un juego de plataformas y acción al más puro estilo Shinobi, Strider o Hagane, que hará las delicias de todos los aficionados a aquellos. Si es tu estilo de juego, no puede faltar en tu juegoteca.

Es una aspiración que apetece tener, y más en el caso de Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider, un ejercicio de estilo que quiere poder confundirse con sus influencias pero que aun así tiene tiempo para actualizarlas, para ponerlas un poco al día, ajustándolas a los usos y costumbres de hoy en día, siempre sin perder algo así como, ¡glups!, su esencia. Merece la pena seguir el trabajo de JoyMasher si te gustan los juegos antiguos, pero me atrevo a ir más allá y celebro el buen gusto con el que este pequeño estudio brasileño aprovecha la oportunidad que les da el estilo anacrónico y anticuado para tender puentes entre la actualidad y el pasado, entre lo que se hace hoy y lo que se hacía en el pasado. ¡Viva el anacronismo!

Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider farà contenti molti nostalgici, molti ultratentenni (e oltre) che hanno passato i loro pomeriggi in sala giochi e davanti alle console a 16-bit, provando quell'ultima partita che avrebbe potuto far raggiungere loro nuovi traguardi, nuovi livelli e magari il tanto agognato finale. Action arcade puro e dritto al punto, quello dei brasiliani Joymasher è un titolo che dimostra come la software house abbia col tempo affinato sempre più le proprie capacità, specializzandosi in opere di genere di stampo retrò.

It's a fun little platformer that controls well and is a delight to play, and it evokes a remarkable amount of nostalgia for a game that is coming out in 2023. Much like Blazing Chrome, it's the closest you'll come to a new Strider game that plays like the old-school Strider. If that is what you're looking for, you'll be delighted, and if you love old-school platforming action, Moonrider offers it in spades, without the quarter-munching or rental fees.

And it’s all complemented by a jaw-dropping art style, which can feel a little grungy on occasion, but has some true standout set-piece moments – like the boss enemies that fill the entire screen. A CRT toggle is available for true retro enthusiasts, but we preferred to play with unfiltered, razor-sharp 4K pixels. And we loved every minute.

If it sounds like the criticisms here are on the pedantic side, that is because Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider’s downsides are largely negligible. This is a pristinely crafted action-platformer that has a strong understanding of what it means to deliver an engaging, frenetic, action-packed experience. If Moonrider had been released on the SNES, it would be one of those legendary 16-bit-era action titles that are frequently referenced in reverent tones. Its influences aren’t hard to see, and it certainly doesn’t do anything to reimagine what a great 2D action title is, but it does everything so extraordinarily well that it never feels redundant. Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider stands shoulder to shoulder with the greats, and all fans of pristinely crafted action games owe it to themselves to give it their attention.

Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider is great in a lot of ways. Even if it stays almost too close to the Mega Man X formula, it still utilizes it well. The visuals and music are definite highlights that put this game apart, but it also just feels satisfying to play. The ride is over all-too-soon, but I’m happy to have taken it. It was another good challenge and we cut up tons of machines, fascists, and fascist machines along the way. More than that, I’d love to see some speedruns of this game because it looks ripe for excellent players to learn and master. If you want a decent action platformer to kick 2023 off with, you can’t go wrong with Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider.

Overall, Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider is an awful lot of fun. Those who appreciate the platforming games of yore will get a nostalgia kick that feels very close to those older titles, with some subtle tweaks to make things more playable. It may not be a game with a lot of longevity, but what's here is very enjoyable.

One of the best things going for Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider is its length. Making your way to the last level and defeating the final boss only takes a few hours. In this way, it knows exactly what it is: a brief but enjoyable nostalgic experience that doesn’t overstay its welcome. By the time you start feeling like you’ve completed a full retro meal, credits are right around the corner and I appreciate it for that. Moonrider’s adventure likely won’t linger with you, but I don’t regret playing the short, familiar, and satisfying experience.

At the end of the day, Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider is a solid retro-inspired action game that does a good job of offering a satisfying albeit brief campaign. You could definitely do a lot worse but there is substantial room for improvement, that's for sure.

Además, su dificultad es mucho más asequible que la de otros juegos que emulan el estilo retro, por lo que puede ser una buena puerta de entrada para jugadores que no conocieran aquella época. Sin embargo, puede que los más exigentes echen en falta un punto más en el desafío. Su duración no es muy prolongada, pudiendo liquidarse en un par de horas si se va ‘a saco’, algo que compensa con su sistema de puntuación, chips y habilidades que invita a volver a sus variados escenarios para superarnos en una nueva pasada.

While there’s certainly nothing really off putting about Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider, it ultimately feels pretty derivative. It does an admirable job of conjuring up feelings and impressions of the 16-bit era, but it fails to push the envelope in any meaningful way. There’s no doubt that it’s a decent way to spend a couple hours as far as action-platformers go, and fans of the genre–particularly the retro-focused kind–will get a kick out of something so clearly paying homage. For my money, though, I’d have liked to see a few twists and a bit more risk taking with such a well-worn type of video game. Falling short of being a full Moonrider, Vengeful Guardian does enough to make rolling credits worthwhile, if not much else.

The game borrows liberally from its inspirations and combines them into a game that looks and plays the part just fine. It just doesn’t push itself or the player on a level that will fully satisfy people who still regularly enjoy the games it takes from.

Ich möchte nicht ungerecht sein gegenüber Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider – aber wo ich bei Blazing Chrome noch voller Retro-Glückseligkeit war, finde ich hier, dass das Spiel mein Hobby um kein Jota voranbringt. Sicher funktioniert alles gut und den Look haben die Brasilianer toll und stimmig hinbekommen, aber sonst wird mir nichts Erinnerungswürdiges geboten. Weder in puncto Platforming-Design noch bei den Bossen traut man sich etwas, stattdessen werden aus Strider und Shinobi bekannte Mechaniken und Muster gekonnt recycelt. Ich vermisse die Power und den Action-Overkill eines 16-Bit-Feuerwerks von Treasure und finde auch nicht, dass sich der Moonrider perfekt steuert. Die Sprintfähigkeit ist sehr angenehm, aber gerade die Wandsprünge dürften sich noch präziser anfühlen und die Spezialwaffen mehr Durchschlagskraft besitzen. Bleibt unterm Strich ein kurzweiliger Retro-Snack ohne den Frustfaktor einstiger Kulttitel, der durch seinen gekonnten 16-Bit-Look überzeugt, aber auch bald verdaut und vergessen ist.

Su acción entretiene mezclando ese toque de acción, con la habilidad al mando para evitar caídas o acabar aplastado, asado o electrocutado. La colección de jefes finales es una pasada, pero entrar a saco nos permitirá acabar con ellos fácilmente. La banda sonora es techno chiptune con mucho ritmo que le da ese punto de adrenalina que le sienta muy bien. Se trata de un juego corto y directo, que yendo a toda velocidad lo podremos completar en 2 horas. Es bastante rejugable, no solo para mejorar el tiempo, sino para encontrar todos los módulos y usar los poderes en diferentes niveles.
