Overall Hellbound meets expectations as a retro style 90’s Shooter. Whilst it does not innovate as much as some people would like, this game has enough about it to be worth the pickup.

Hellbound se copia demasiado de aquellos que toma como referencia, pero eso no quita que lo que intenta hacer lo hace bien, muy bien. Si te encantan los shooters que ofrecen experiencias más desafiantes, tienes aquí un contendiente más que digno para tu cartera.

Hellbound is a great experience. Although it does rely heavily on the DOOM aesthetic, Saibot Studios have created a core gameplay experience that could be the launchpad of something brilliant.

Hellbound no espera innovar ni hacernos reflexionar ni replantearnos la existencia o ningún aspecto del mundo del videojuego. Su premisa es honesta, simple y directa, y cumple con lo que promete. Su principal hándicap es que, en el panorama actual, hay suficientes títulos de este estilo tanto actuales como clásicos, de desarrollo independiente o grandes producciones, como para que realmente sea complicado para Saibot Studios abrirse paso, destacar y dar un motivo para adquirir este título y no otro que pueda ser más amplio o tenga un acabado más redondo. Solo si eres muy fan del género y/o ya has devorado todo lo que se te ha puesto por delante, o tal vez si buscar un juego económico y corto y te llama la atención a pesar de no tener muchas pretensiones, puedes darle un hueco en tu biblioteca de Steam.

The team at Saibot Studios have made exactly what they promised to their Kickstarter backers, but I was left wanting more. This doesn't make Hellbound a bad game, but it certainly feels like there were a few things left on the cutting room floor as I finished the game. After a somewhat slow start in the campaign, I was happy to finish the fight, and any fan of 1990s FPS fans could do worse than slaying demons in Hellbound.

There are plenty of ways Hellbound could have expanded beyond the framework it borrows from to color outside the lines a bit, but even as a play-it-safe tribute to 90s shooter royalty, it still manages to serve up a cold, hard dish of bloody brutality gritty enough to make Doom Guy blush.

If you’re hankering for more of that simple, unfettered Doom action, Hellbound may well scratch your itch. It’s not deep or particularly clever, but it is about as close to a 90s FPS as you can get without just playing one. It’s deliberately challenging, knowingly over the top, and as loud as you want it to be. Just don’t be surprised if it all feels very familiar from the get-go.

Hellbound may not be great but it’s a short, sweet thrill ride while it lasts.  The action is nice and fast with the guns packing a solid punch, and all the weapons earn their place in the arsenal.  The length of the game means its limits don’t have a chance to feel grating and the sameness of the enemies is nicely offset by the personality of the levels.  Even after the game is over there are still a handful of arena levels to play in, trying to survive as long as possible to claim a spot on its leaderboards.  Hellbound may be restrained by its limits but there’s no question it does a lot within them and it’s good bloody fun while the ride lasts.

Solid and definitely has an audience. There could be some hard-to-ignore faults, but the experience is fun.

Saibot es un estudio argentino que arrancó su proyecto con sólo dos personas. Meses más tarde, dos integrantes adicionales se sumaron al proyecto. Luego, agregaron un quinto elemento y —recién hace dos años con un Kickstarter y la espalda de Nimble Giant— pudieron sumar un último refuerzo a sus filas. 

Hellbound is a fun shooter that’s got all the hallmarks of what made the 90s FPS genre so great. Unfortunately, just like the 90s games before it, it’s pretty dated in both optimization and graphics. There’s a large number of bugs and game-breaking glitches to be experienced, all of which tarnish what is otherwise an incredible experience.

Hellbound is a decent game inspired by the 90's shooters, although we wished it had more content and more character to it.

Hellbound is based around recreating the classic first-person shooter game experience of the 90s, which it does succeed in doing. If you were a fan of those games or wanted to experience what they were like in a modern package, then the developers at Saibot Studios have delivered, for the most part. Unfortunately, the game falls short of a great experience.

Bottomline, all things considered, if you’re looking for a fun, fast, short-lived, throwback FPS game, Hellbound is definitely worth considering. Just don’t expect too much out of it and you’ll find your time and money well spent.

The saving grace is Hellbound‘s price. At just £11.39/$14.99, it’s not terrible value for money. But there are better old-school first-person shooters available for not much more. Still, there’s a good few hours of fun to get from Hellbound‘s campaign. Maybe even more if you’re the type that wants to discover every secret and beat every par time. And the game’s survival maps offer yet more hours of gameplay. It’s just a shame that it feels more like a starter than a main course.

Este título es un tributo claro al clásico Doom, toma todos los elementos de dicho juego y le pone gráficas un poco más modernas, transmite muy bien esa onda noventera, pero sin parecer anticuado, cabe destacar que al ser de un estudio argentino no tuvo un gran presupuesto y sin embargo el trabajo final está bastante pulido.

Hellbound nos ha dejado con un sabor de boca agridulce tras completar las menos de dos horas de juego que ofrece con su campaña, a lo que debemos sumar un modo de supervivencia por oleadas que aporta algo más de desafío a la oferta de juego del título, pero que no logra tapar evidentes carencias en muchos otros aspectos. La propuesta de Saibot Studios es divertida y ofrece momentos frenéticos más que interesantes, especialmente para los fans del género. Pero serán éstos, precisamente, los más críticos con un videojuego que trata de recuperar el estilo de los FPS de los 90 con una ejecución pobre que se conforma con los aspectos más básicos del género. Y es que una apuesta tan interesante como la que nos ocupa no puede valerse solo de la nostalgia para ofrecer un producto con mucho margen de mejora, sin estar a la altura de aquellos títulos a los que rinde homenaje y muy lejos de los actuales estandartes del género.

Hellbound offers some old school fun if you enjoy putting your aim and reflexes to the test. It’s a shame the developers stopped at seven levels, one boss fight, a handful of monsters, and six weapons (of which two are useless and some lack an alternative fire mode). What would have been merely a first episode in a 90’s shooter, pretends to be a whole campaign in Hellbound. If you’re experienced with the genre, you’ll finish the game in around two hours. Hellbound es un título que se lleva un suficiente y que parece que no quiere aspirar a más. Sí, cumple con su cometido de permitirnos explorar niveles, pegar tiros y entretenernos durante unas horas pero todo en el juego, a nivel de diseño, está poco inspirado y no destaca en ningún aspecto, siendo corto, con pocas armas y monstruos y en ocasiones soso, algo que con el nivel que tienen los shooter de hoy en día le da muy pocas posibilidades en un género que roza lo excelso con títulos como Doom Eternal, Dusk o Amid Evil.

Estimo que no son detalles menores, ni mucho menos. De hecho, el género de los shooters en primera persona está atestado de juegos. Hoy por hoy, en PC, podemos acceder a clásicos de primer nivel y juegos modernos por costos muy asequibles; tenemos juegos triple A y otros más pequeños, o juegos independientes que también buscan hacer sus homenajes y que en el proceso encuentran algo para decir respecto a lo que significan estos juegos y al estilo clásico que quieren evocar. Hellbound por su parte, se agarra de la parte menos interesante de aquellos clásicos dejando de lado lo esencial y, por consiguiente, se queda sin mucho que decir ni nada nuevo que aportar. Y es una pena, porque realmente esperaba mucho más.

Hellbound has potential, and will surely find an audience for both its nostalgia and its challenge. While the story is almost completely unnecessary, it's a real shock that the whole narrative focus appears to not be concluded in the game, though. Just as the story gets going, and the first big boss is defeated, the endgame credits roll, leaving Hellbound feeling unfinished. That feeling is compounded by the fact that the main reason for returning comes from the score-based survival mode which is still available as a free download on Steam. Hellbound is not big, nor is it clever, and in all the wrong ways.

Hellbound has really good movement and the texture quality looks nice, but it's insanely short, the level design is mediocre, and there's nothing here that FPS fans haven't seen done better for decades.

Hellbound te aportará un buen rato, pero para ser un buen FPS clásico necesita mejorar mucho.

Ultimately, Hellbound isn't going to leave a sour taste in any player's mouth, but that's only because it leaves no taste at all. It's a bland retread of a bygone era of gaming that has no understanding of why people want to return to it. Hellbound carelessly mashes up concepts and mechanics with no thought and no craft, creating an end product that's serviceable only because of the strength of its foundation. Fighting demons with a shotgun is fun. It always was fun, and it always will be fun, and there's nothing wrong with Hellbound's interpretation of that. It's just that there are a thousand other games that do all this so much better, so it's hard to see why anyone would pick up this particular shotgun.

In truth, what is currently available feels like a prototype for something better. If the campaign were just longer, tighter, more refined, then Hellbound would be an easy recommendation. Saibot created something that feels solid in the hands but doesn't quite stick the landing. You can only play the campaign so many times before you've seen it all and Hellbound simply doesn't deliver much else.
