The fact it’s also a really fun game about punching stuff is a bonus on top of an experience that’s just… well, I’ll say it again - Clash: Artifacts of Chaos is truly beautiful.

Clash: Artifacts of Chaos is an interesting mix of ideas, most of them familiar, with some unique twists. The hand-to-hand combat focus is good, although it takes a lot of experimentation to do everything right. The world is intriguing and surprising, especially when it comes to character and enemy design.

Clash pulls much inspiration from the 2018 God of War. The basic premise of protecting The Boy as Pseudo and some of the significant beats mirror Sony’s Epic, so some character progression and twists felt predictable. To Clash’s credit, I was still invested, and the world is so weird and the characters are so much fun that I quickly forgot the world of Kratos and got lost in Zenozoik all over again.

The return to Zenozoik will please gamers looking for something different from the ordinary in terms of atmosphere, visuals and overall vibe. The gameplay, however, has issues that, on occasion, can prove to be frustrating.

Although Clash: Artifacts of Chaos does drag its feet, the game still has enough positives to offer players. Best of all is the amazing visual appearance of Zenozoik and its many awesome inhabitants, combined with the great music, that make it worth playing for its presentation alone. Fans of the Zeno Clash games will get a kick out of the visual upgrade. As a third-person beat-em-up, the fisticuffs can be enjoyable despite there being too much of it and little else. The associated Ritual mini-game is fine but does not provide enough benefit or lasting value. While the many Dark Souls traits are obvious and make the game challenging, the levels are consistently annoying to navigate due to their indirect routes and confusing structure. Clash: Artifacts of Chaos is a good way to beat up strange critters in stunning environments, even if it doesn’t land all of its punches.

A spiritual successor to the Zeno Clash franchise, Clash: Artifacts of Chaos preserves and extends those games’ trademark weirdness. Clash: Artifacts of Chaos takes some chances and adds some interesting mechanics to the action game formula. Not everything works, unfortunately, and the game can be striking, engrossing, and frustrating in equal measure. I loved the game’s singular art direction, day/night mechanic, and more, but the combat is a mixed bag. Clash: Artifacts of Chaos is almost, but not quite, worth playing for its art alone.

Clash: Artifacts of Chaos is an idiosyncratic adventure, managing to be jaw-droppingly beautiful, fun and often mesmerising while hanging on to some of the Souls-like genre's most frustrating elements.

Beautifully different action game. It's not perfect and there are some things that could be improved, but you will find original elements and interesting moments that are worth it. It's a shame that the various distractions make the game less enjoyable and can be frustrating. However, if you want an unusual combat and action experience, you will definitely get it here.

Clash is almost offensively obtuse next to games like God of War, then, while its challenge level oscillates between a breeze and a gale. It also fails to either drip feed small rewards or produce a sense of achievement when you come through tough spots, since success often comes from attritional stubbornness. Yet there’s something to be said for Clash’s refusal to explain its ideas, places and oddball creatures the way God of War would. It’s more efficient in its world building, characterisation and plotting, and thus more generously open to interpretation. Pseudo may be Kratos’ smaller, weaker (and poorer) sibling, but at least he’s got a deeper and more interesting soul.

In the end, Clash is not so bad. If we forget about the gameplay. The title has a pretty good story and a pretty engaging universe. We don’t know if the studio has planned a future sequel. But if it is the case. We hope for a complete overhaul of the gameplay which has not evolved since the first title…

Clash: Artifacts of Chaos manages to bring fresh air in the face of the countless attempts at innovations within the fever of soulslikes. Its visual identity, atmosphere and narrative gain a prominence that can envy competitors. Unfortunately, the lack of politeness and technical issues end up detracting from the experience.

Clash: Artifacts of Chaos looks stunning and has some interesting ideas, but the uninteresting combat and obtuse gameplay left me bored when playing. It’s a shame because the world design is wonderful and I found myself invested in the storytelling, but I just couldn’t get on with the core mechanics of the game. Is it a bad game? I wouldn’t say so and there was nothing broken about it, but it is one that feels like it targets a specific audience.

Clash: Artifacts of Chaos fails to combine its interesting new ideas with contemporary design choices. Which is a shame given how unique the game looks.
