Astra Exodus is a fairly decent 4X strategy game with some interesting ideas and a surprisingly good tactical combat system, but it’s bogged down by a lack of polish and some technical issues.

In the end, Astra Exodus is a capable 4X game. It is much better than other similar titles out there and it is definitely worth a shot if you want something more straightforward than Stellaris or GalCiv. It as a very well-executed game, so if you are not put out by the 2D graphics and the cartoony, anime-like illustrations then give it a try.

While it stands out in absolutely no other way, Astra Exodus does at least have some semblance of character thanks to the simple act of putting faces to things. Every department under your control has a gurning mug attached to it, and some alien designs are pretty natty. Admittedly this is pushing things a bit to call it a ‘highlight’.

Perhaps my tolerance for Master-of-Orion-2 by the numbers is completely nonexistent at this point, but the more I played Astra Exodus, the less I liked it. I begrudgingly played the last 20 hours in hopes of infusing more positivity into this review, but I just couldn’t find it. I know I’m not the only one who feels this way, based on the Previously-Overwhelmingly-Negative, but now “Mixed” Steam Reviews. However, I still feel bad for putting this one down. Its developer, Fernando Rey, seems like a genuinely good person, too, so I feel even worse about being so heavy-handed.
