Flat Kingdom es un gran título que enamora a la vista por su peculiar apartado artístico y diseño de personajes. Ese estilo 2D hecho a mano con diferentes texturas crean un mundo único y original.  No solo tiene un gran apartado artístico, sino que presenta un gameplay original con las mecánicas de piedra, papel y tijera que incitan al jugador a cambiar de forma constantemente para el combate y el movimiento en los diversos escenarios.

I made the joke already, but I still think it’s a good one. Flat Kingdom Paper Cut’s Edition does not fall flat in it’s execution. It’s a great time and there’s plenty of replayability. Better yet, the game has a great glossary for everything you come into contact, including notes you’ll find that expand the lore. So give this game a try, it’s not ‘tear-able’.

Flat Kingdom Paper’s Cut Edition is surprisingly fun and has a great presentation and fun bosses to fight. My wife was watching me as I played and also dug the visuals and even got invested in the story as I played. Being a Ratalaika Games release, you can also expect to achieve two new Platinum trophies in around 20 to 30 minutes since your purchase includes the PS4 and PS5 versions, and each one has a separate trophy list.

The Flat Kingdom is a beautiful and peaceful 2D land, but now it’s threatened by an evil thief and becoming 3D! The only who can stop the chaos is Flat, a little hero able to change into a circle, triangle or square in order to solve puzzles, overcome obstacles and defeat giant bosses!

OK, so the Flat Kingdom looks cool with its papercraft-style graphics and Cutesy characters. You play as 3 people at once, you hotswap between them and each one is a unique shape with its own actions, triangle is fast, the circle double jumps and the square does heavy slams, it makes for a rock paper scissors style combat system and injects a small number of puzzle elements to proceedings. All the ideas make for a very mediocre experience, I never felt like the game got going or felt cohesive. It’s a game that just never really gels it all together and instead makes simple tasks a pain on the ass, the combat is one that you constantly forget about so you just mash through the shapes every fight. Even if you get past that and just get going with it the boss fights are so confusing and bullet spongy that the journey generally ends up in a swear-laden fit of rage. Flat Kingdom Papers Cut Edition is an attempt at a fun unique platform romp but never sticks the landing.

Flat Kingdom sabe atrapar con su estética basada en papel y un diseño de personajes atractivo y carismáticos, al igual que su jugabilidad plataformera con toques de backtraking, pero el diseño de niveles es bastante plano y no destaca por tener una jugabilidad adictiva.

Pese al mundo original donde la tridimensionalidad brilla por su ausencia, y donde nuestro héroe tiene habilidades únicas, no termina de despuntar como debería. El esquema de juego se hace lento, y los escenarios no aportan ese potencial extra que deberían tener por su condición de “planicidad”. Al menos los enemigos finales son desafiantes, con puzles integrados en sus mecánicas de combate que resultan muy interesantes de descubrir y poner en práctica.

But Flat Kingdom: Paper’s Cut Edition couldn’t help itself. It overburdens itself with different mechanics, and the simple, effective platforming ends up being sunk by its ambition. It is death by a thousand paper cuts.

Flat Kingdom Paper’s Cut Edition has made it’s way onto Xbox and while it’s not bad, it’s not great. Mediocre platforming mixed with simple yet convoluted mechanics that took my brain longer than it should to catch on made this for a very “meh” experience. At least it’s easy gamerscore though!

But let’s return to that retail price of just £6.49/$7.99. For the price of two cups of coffee, you’ve got an indie platforming adventure that offers up several hours of entertainment. Flat Kingdom may be a little clunky, sure, but it’s not broken – and if you’re a fan of simple side-scrolling platforming, you might find something to enjoy here. It’s not going to light your world on fire in any way, but there are certainly worse games out there.

Para quem está atrás de um passatempo rápido de plataforma e de mecânicas de memorização, Flat Kingdom é uma boa recomendação, além de ser rápido (pode ser zerado em 4 ou 5 horas, facilmente). Mas para quem busca uma jogabilidade refinada, mecânicas mais interessantes e uma experiência diferenciada, sobretudo em comparação à Nintendo eShop como um todo, Flat Kingdom Paper’s Cut Edition não chega nem perto de ser uma boa opção.
