Cris Tales is a fantasy adventure akin to a fairy tale in both narrative and setting. It’s an amazing experience accompanied by memorable characters, an addictive battle system, and wonderful discoveries. Every moment of the gameplay pushes the RPG to new heights, which is only hindered by lengthy load times and lack of direction for some missions. However, if you’re looking for a callback to retro RPGs, this is one game you absolutely need to play.

Ich kann mit Freude sagen: Ich habe nicht grundlos auf Cris Tales gewartet, denn es bietet mir eine tiefgründige Story über Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft und zeigt mir direkt und unmittelbar, welche Auswirkungen meine Entscheidungen auf das Leben der Bewohner/-innen der jeweiligen Reiche haben. Ich muss nicht ewig warten, bzw. bekomme mein Ergebnis vielleicht gar nicht mit, weil ich es einfach die ganze Zeit über sehen kann. Das liebe ich so sehr an Cris Tales, ebenso wie das taktische Vorgehen in den rundenbasierten Kämpfen, in denen ich ebenfalls mit der Zeit spielen kann, das mir aber im Grunde gar nicht vorschreibt, wie ich vorgehen soll. Und ich bin der Musik und den Synchronsprecher/-innen verfallen. Cris Tales ist eine klasse Hommage an alte Rollenspiele, die trotzdem ihren ganz eigenen Charme mitbringt und zu einem wahren Kristall meiner Indiesammlung geworden ist. Vor allem für Fans von Rollenspielen geeignet und für all jene, die eine Vorliebe für bunte Spiele mit schwierigen Herzensthemen haben.

Dopo una lunga attesa fatta di trailer e annunci vari, Cris Tales ha saputo infine presentarsi innanzi a noi in forma smagliante. Le semplici basi narrative assumono particolare spessore grazie alle numerosi – e spesso non banali – scelte morali con cui dovremo destreggiarci, mentre le varie opzioni ludiche legate ai salti temporali si sono rivelate particolarmente riuscite, sia nelle fasi esplorative che in quelle dove è il combat-system a turni a farla da padrone, con scontri dal tasso di sfida particolarmente gustoso che richiederanno un sapiente utilizzo di magie, resistenze e debolezze. Uno splendido comparto visivo caratterizzato da disegni 2D disegnati a mano e un ottimo doppiaggio italiano affiancato da una soundtrack di spessore chiudono il cerchio della creatura targata Dreams Uncorporated e SYCK. Cris Tales è insomma una produzione indie di spessore che merita indubbiamente di essere provata da quanti più videogiocatori possibili.

Cris Tales è un indie che attinge a piene mani da tutto quello che ha reso il genere JRPG popolare nella storia videoludica, aggiungendo però delle meccaniche uniche e donando al titolo un carattere tutto suo. Lo stile grafico è estremamente gradevole e mette perfettamente in risalto i personaggi e le ambientazioni. Il sistema di combattimento, sebbene classico del genere, riesce a distinguersi dalla massa grazie a quelle piccole ma sostanziali modifiche che rendono l’azione molto più dinamica. Le scelte presenti nel titolo non sono così tante, in quanto la maggior parte delle modifiche all’ambiente scaturisce dal compimento di missioni secondarie, tuttavia i cambiamenti nel mondo sono presenti e anche ben visibili. L’adattamento italiano ha qualche leggero problema in alcuni dialoghi di gioco, ma nulla di effettivamente grave. In conclusione consigliamo l’acquisto di Cris Tales a tutti gli amanti del genere e non, siamo sicuri che riuscirà a catturarvi esattamente come ha fatto con noi.

Cris Tales è un inno d'amore ai JRPG, ma è anche una ventata d'aria fresca ricca di numerosi spunti interessanti. Cris Tales non inventa nulla di nuovo, ma sfrutta i pilastri di un genere innovando nei punti giusti con il sapiente uso degli escamotage temporali. Soffre dei congeniti problemi di un JRPG d'altri tempi ma riesce a creare numerosi spunti ricchi di originalità. A partire dalla scelta di basarsi sulle cultura colombiana a 360 gradi, dalla bellezza architettonica alla vivacità dei dipinti, passando per le difficoltà sociali e le condizioni economiche anche attraverso le contrastanti scelte politiche. Che sia la direzione artistica o uno spunto narrativo, Cris Tales non è superficiale né approssimativo ma trova sempre un modo delicato di raccontare una storia.

Cris Tales is the JRPG you need to try next. It has something for everyone; the striking visuals are there to capture newbies, the active-ish turn-based combat can convert any turn-based skeptic, and the strong faithful mechanics are there to appease the fussiest hardcore JRPG connoisseurs. This game has enough charm to have you whispering “that’s cute” under your breath 8 hours in, and enough nostalgia to bring back memories of summer vacations 10 or 20 years ago.

En definitiva, Cris Tales es una apuesta segura si os gusta el género, y estando además en Game Pass no hay excusa que valga. Si teníais dudas o no es el tipo de videojuego que os llama la atención, recomiendo darle una oportunidad. Su estilo artístico es único, y en él se representan multitud de guiños a la cultura colombiana. El Santuario de las Lajas como catedral de la ficticia Narim, o «Santa Clarita» como adaptación de Santa Clara, la cual se ubica en la región de Tolima, son solo algunos. Como guinda del pastel, os contaré también que en Colombia se encuentra el famoso Caño Cristales, constituido por 7 ríos de colores que deben su particular aspecto a las plantas acuáticas típicas de la zona. No diréis que no hay motivos de sobra para no jugarlo.

I really hope the other platforms that Cris Tales has been released on have better performance, because those loading times alone take something special, and unfortunately undermine it. This is one of those rare times to me where technical issue really do mess with the experience, disrupting the carefully-structured panic and pulling players away from the breathtaking art. There's still a lot to love about Cris Tales, and the vision is beautiful and evocative. But we are in 2021 and battles in an JRPG shouldn't require a loading screen. No matter how beautiful and heartfelt they are.

Cris Tales embraces the old model of JRPGs, making it feel like a well-worn experience for seasoned fans of the genre. All of the charm, whimsy, and innocence of Final Fantasy and The Legend Of Zelda ooze throughout the game’s setting and characters, but Crisbell’s time powers provide a fun new spin on the classic turn-based combat. Cris Tales isn’t that difficult either, making it a good choice for beginners looking to get into turn-based RPGs.               

Regardless of its issues, there’s no denying that Cris Tales fulfils the mission its developers set out to achieve, and with gusto: this truly is a gorgeous love letter to classic JRPGs. An epic story combined with a truly beautiful visual style will keep you hooked until the credits roll. With a small update here and there, Cris Tales has all the makings of a modern classic.

Cris Tales no es un juego para todo el mundo. Toma mecánicas muy clásicas del género, convirtiendo al juego en una experiencia lenta, y sus tiempos de carga son capaces de sacar de quicio a más de uno. Pero en cambio, a nosotros nos ha gustado su jugabilidad de controlar el tiempo por lo novedoso y original, además su estilo artístico es muy mono.

Cris Tales deslumbra con su atractivo apartado gráfico y lo bien que integra los viajes en el tiempo a su fórmula, especialmente en combate. Pero, por momentos, parece haberse quedado atrapado en el pasado arrastrando muchos de los problemas del género (grindeo, zonas pasilleras, tareas opcionales poco interesantes...). Y es una lástima...

In definitiva Cris Tales è un ottimo titolo che ha mancato di coraggio. Con una meccanica di base così interessante ci saremmo aspettati decisamente qualcosa di più a livello di gameplay e maggiore libertà “creativa per il giocatore”. Rimane comunque un gioco capace di divertire e da giocare per tutti gli appassionati del genere. E perché no, anche per tutti gli altri, vista la difficoltà bassa e la conseguente esperienza abbastanza tranquilla e rilassante.

I cannot deny that Cris Tales is one of the most beautiful games I have seen in a long time, it maintains its beauty with how it animates the characters and the vast world they inhabit. Cris Tales is a JRPG and with that comes a lot of turn-based combat and mission variety. The combat is very familiar and has a Persona style to it in terms of presentation but the combat does add to it all by having the time element in play. You can kick an enemy into the past, present, or future which can set up combos or expose a weak point on an enemy. It’s a mechanic that is refreshing but also limiting with not a lot of things you can do outside of the cookie-cutter combos. Time is the name of the game here as outside of combat you will see the screen is split into three, each segment represents a space in time them being passed, present, and future. In real-time you can see people and the world change, you can even time hop and become your loving campaign Matias who happens to be an “I can’t speak to people or do a lot” Frog. Again it’s a cool mechanic but it always feels like a scripted event as using it outside of the predetermined areas results in nothing notable. I came away from Cris Tales never sure if I liked it or not, it would have good highs and crushing lows, it never seems to stay at a set pace, and that caused the story to get a bit messy and horrible fetch style quests aplenty. I don’t hate Cris Tales and I don’t love it, it’s a visually stunning game with cool time mechanics that are never fully realized.

Un bell'omaggio ai JRPG con una personalità tutta sua e una bella storia, che però manca di profondità e non riesce a dare il giusto peso alla sua meccanica più peculiare.

Me lo he pasado bien jugándolo, aunque también me ha frustrado en ocasiones. Es una primera toma de contacto para el estudio y un motivo para mantener a Dreams Uncorporated y a SYCK bajo el radar. Por cómo es el final, deja la puerta abierta a una secuela, pero a su vez es autoconclusivo, y puedo garantizar que tienen mi confianza para, en caso de sacar una segunda parte, estar ahí recargando la página para reservarlo cuanto antes. 

'Cris Tales' es un acercamiento interesante al JRPG visto desde la perspectiva de un estudio colombiano, con sus luces y sus sombras. Los personajes protagonistas son simpáticos y se les coge cariño pronto, todo ello en un mundo fantástico que hemos visto muchas veces. La mecánica de los viajes en el tiempo está muy bien implementada en varios niveles de la jugabilidad, aunque podría haberse pulido un poco más. Lo mismo pasa en otros aspectos, pero al final, el conjunto general nos ha dejado un muy buen sabor de boca. Un título con muy buenas intenciones y un estudio que promete darnos más calidad en el futuro.

Cris Tales aveva tra le mani una di quelle possibilità che capita forse una sola volta nella vita di uno studio di sviluppo: la classica idea portentosa e potenzialmente innovativa che avrebbe potuto esplodere e trasformare il progetto in uno dei migliori jrpg vecchia scuola dell'ultimo decennio e forse persino oltre. Tuttavia, quella che sembrava un perla incredibilmente luminosa perde lucentezza dopo poche ore, svelando alcuni calcoli approssimativi su difficoltà e meccaniche di base mal sfruttate. E questo è un gran peccato, perché nonostante tutto Cris Tales merita tutta la vostra attenzione e anche un secondo capitolo che possa subito correggere il tiro.

En general, estamos ante un juego simplista, que toca temas que podrían dar mucho de sí, pero optan por obviar muchas de las posibilidades a las que podrían acceder con el fin de ofrecernos una trama más sólida, sin entrar en excesivas complicaciones. Se disfruta enormemente si tienes ello en mente. No es un imprescindible, pero sabrá alegrarte más de una tarde.

A loving tribute to the past and present of Japanese role-players, with some impressively clever time travel powers and gorgeous artwork – although it’s a shame about the random battles.

Cris Tales cuenta con una propuesta totalmente única, mezclando su apartado visual, su música y su jugabilidad, es un juego con una personalidad propia y simplemente viendo una imagen reconoces perfectamente de qué juegos se trata, si bien es cierto que esto mismo podría no gustar a otros, ya que tiene una estético y visual muy marcada, quizá poco adulta o demasiado infantil para algunos. Eso a cierto tipo de jugadores puede no ser de su agrado y echarles para atrás. Si por el contrario el apartado artístico te convence y si eres fanático de los juegos de rol por turnos con Cris Tales tienes diversión asegurada, te lo recomendamos al 100 por 100, pasarás muy buenos momentos acompañado de Crisbell y el resto de sus amigos. Además de estar disponible en formato físico gracias a Tesura Games.

The incredible world-building found in Cris Tales is often overshadowed by lackluster combat, regardless of the unique time travel mechanics.

Cris Tales is een game die een beetje blijft hangen. Het heeft aan de ene kant meer dan genoeg potentie en een mooi weergegeven verhaal. Aan de andere kant zijn er helaas vele, vele gevechten te langdradig en te veelvuldig. Hierdoor gaat deze RPG niet meer om het verhaal, maar om de vele Game Over momenten. De balans is een tikje te ver doorgeslagen. Is het daarmee een slechte game? Nee, maar het had zoveel beter kunnen zijn.

Production de deux studios indépendants colombiens, Cris Tales était vendu comme une lettre d’amour aux JRPGs plus classiques, eh bien nous pouvons dire que c’est bien le cas. L’hommage et les inspirations se ressentent avec de multiples thématiques et features issues des plus grands jeux : Paper Mario, Persona 5, Final Fantasy IV et VI, entre autres. Tout ceci s'accompagnant d’un système de voyage dans le temps à la Chrono Trigger mais présenté ici sous une forme inédite. Passé, présent et futur s’entremêlent alors afin de créer trois visions en temps réel avec de surcroît de magnifiques visuels, une histoire intrigante, des personnages attachants, des quêtes basées sur ce même système de triple temps et des combats possédant de bonnes idées. Malheureusement, si cette feature de temporalité a vraiment de quoi satisfaire, le manque de difficulté durant les affrontements, le côté à l’ancienne (sauvegardes manuelles à certains endroits, entre autres), et les fréquences aléatoires parfois élevées pourront en décourager certain(e)s. En revanche, si vous êtes fans de JRPGs et que ces quelques soucis de finitions ne vous dérangent pas, Cris Tales sera à coup sûr un beau voyage à réaliser. 

Avec ses graphismes et son gameplay au tour par tour le rapprochant des JRPG, Cris Tales sait se montrer séduisant, d’autant plus qu’il est rehaussé d’une bande-son appréciable aux pistes variées. Le doublage en VO est lui aussi de qualité, même s’il a parfois tendance à casser un peu le rythme. Dommage que les animations soient un peu raides et que le soft souffre de quelques lags lors des combats. Ceux-ci, bien qu’agréables, s’avèrent également un peu trop faciles et fréquents, donnant rapidement un sentiment de répétitivité exagérée. Le titre bénéficie en contrepartie d’une bonne durée de vie. La présence des ennemis non indiquée et les chargements récurrents peuvent également lui être reprochés. Il n’empêche que, même si l’on aurait apprécié une histoire un peu plus mature, celle-ci se laisse agréablement suivre et que le gameplay jouant avec le temps fonctionne très bien.

Cris Tales starts strong as a time travel RPG set in a beautiful world, but suffers from a misguided plot and combat woes

Cris Tales is a beautiful indie RPG that is held back by various issues, keeping it from being one of the greats. Incredible story, filled with exciting characters, areas and interesting time powers, makes it worth the play. However, held back by an uninteresting battle system that becomes stale and too easy, a horrible third act of the game slows it down to a crawl. You'll find something to love with Cris Tales if you can look over some of its flaws.

I wanted to like Cris Tales. There are parts of Cris Tales I really adore. Cris Tales COULD be a good game. Unfortunately, it’s not a good game as of writing this. I would avoid Cris Tales on the Switch until there’s been some patching done or you’ve tested it on another platform.

Cris Tales claims to be a “love letter to classic JRGs” and it has all the elements that make up a great JRPG by bringing back things we’ve missed about the older classics but it hasn’t quite executed them as well as I’d hoped. The combat was easily the best part of Cris Tales but this was unfortunately ruined by loading screens/times; I hope they can get this fixed ASAP so the game can receive more credit. This is one of the few, maybe only, games I’ve played where my experience was ruined by a mix of technical issues.
