Saviorless is a dark fantasy action-platformer with hand-drawn art. It brings us the story of Antar, who goes on a journey to the Smiling Island in order to become a Savior… which ends up being not what he was initially expecting. The game’s focus is certainly on the platforming segments and on Artan’s quest since the Savior and combat are introduced late in the game for what can be roughly the last hour – of a 3-4 hours running time. This is why there’s not much enemy variety, which might rub some people the wrong way if going into this one expecting a game with a lot more combat. 

PopSlinger is a fun narrative-driven musical shooter on PlayStation 5. It has beat ’em up roots, but you’ll be using a variety of soda-powered guns to defeat the different colored enemies you’ll run into, as well as the bosses that you will take on at the end of each level. It’s a game that has been inspired by the music and aesthetics of the 1980s and 1990s, with a solid soundtrack that will change based on your performance. Avatar The Last Airbender: Quest For Balance brings us a chance to relieve the beloved Avatar series by experiencing key moments presented over its 18 chapters. Think of it as the type of game we would get back in the day as a movie tie-in videogame during, say, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System era, and you’ll get an idea of what to expect from this one. Mothmen 1966 was a pleasant surprise on PlayStation 4, and it was the perfect way to kick off the new Pixel Pulps series of old-school-infused visual novels on Sony’s consoles. Mothmen 1966 ran for a few hours, and that’s also the case for Varney Lake. It’s a bite-sized adventure that does not overstay its welcome. It perfectly dials up the pulp factor to 11, and it makes me look forward to Bahnsen Knights, the third entry in the series. 

Railway Islands is a colorful, charming, relaxing, and fun puzzle game that will test your skills as you work on a series of levels of increasing difficulty. The game does a good job of introducing new elements at a steady pace so that you don’t end up feeling overwhelmed. Railway Islands is out on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch at a low price of only $3.99.

Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider is a 2D sidescrolling game that pays homage to the 16-bit era of action games. It’s certainly nailed the retro challenge of games from the Sega Genesis/MegaDrive and Super Nintendo Entertainment System era, as well as their look and feel. You can complete the game in around 2-3 hours at most, depending on your experience with 2D action games like this one, but if you want to 100% the game, you’ll need to get good to obtain an S rank on every stage. No Place for Bravery is a challenging top-down action RPG with a minimalist pixel art style that will grab your attention from the moment you start to play through the intro segment that gives you a glimpse into what Thorn has gone through. Be sure to interact with all of the white pages you’ll find here and there during your time with the game since they will unlock additional lore for you to review so that you can get a better idea of what has happened before in this world. The difficulty ramps up at a steady pace as you progress through the game, and the choices you make along the way will matter, changing how other interactions play out. Its easy and simple gameplay loop makes it a game you can quickly get the hang of. You will need to adjust to how there’s no invincibility window after being hit, because otherwise you’ll be dead in a couple of seconds if surrounded by enemies. LootLite is available as a Cross-Buy title with a budget price of only $4.99, giving you both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 versions with your purchase.

The Legend of Arcadieu Bundle gives us two visual novels set in a fantasy video game world, in which romance seems to always be right around the corner, be that with NPC or with the monster girls you’ll be fighting in this RPG-themed experience. Unfortunately, the two games are rather average and don’t offer a lot of fun. Add how the fan service is going to rub some people the wrong way, and this is one to avoid. FOBIA – St. Dinfna Hotel is a really good survival horror game that’s definitely worth checking out. It has some nuisance with the inventory system, but this shouldn’t stop you from trying it out.

The Watchmaker has an interesting premise and fun gameplay mechanics, but there are some issues along the way. There’s some slowdown during some segments with lots of moving pieces around and enemies to take care of, and some of the levels can prove to be a bit trickier since the layout makes the areas in a stage feel too similar. The Watchmaker is out on PlayStation 4 at a $14.99 price.

Flat Kingdom Paper’s Cut Edition is surprisingly fun and has a great presentation and fun bosses to fight. My wife was watching me as I played and also dug the visuals and even got invested in the story as I played. Being a Ratalaika Games release, you can also expect to achieve two new Platinum trophies in around 20 to 30 minutes since your purchase includes the PS4 and PS5 versions, and each one has a separate trophy list.

Aztech: Forgotten Gods is clearly a game made by a passionate and ambitious indie team, but it is also proof that passion and ambition do not always guarantee a perfect execution.

Sky Racket is a fun brick breaker and shoot ’em up mash-up with a great-looking art style, easy to understand gameplay mechanics, and 12 stages to beat. There’s some extra replay value thanks to the bonus objectives to complete, and twice the fun to be had thanks to its local co-op multiplayer. Sky Racket is out now on Nintendo Switch with a $14.99 price tag.

Golazo! distills the football experience to give us an arcade-style take on the sport that is a lot of fun to play at home or on the go. It brings back the look and feel of the old-school football games from the 1990s to a new generation on the Nintendo Switch. It’s available for a budget $14.99 and is definitely worth its asking price.
