Per Aspera's novel adaptation of nonlinear narrative to fit a strategy game goes over surprisingly well. Combined with a novel terraforming mechanic, slick aesthetics, hard science chops, and classic genre gameplay, this one is definitely worth the time.

This is a great colony sim with a a ton of imagination, well-disguised in places as real science. It lays the existentialism on pretty thick at times, and it has the potential to thoroughly overwhelm you, but Per Aspera is an oddly intoxicating expedition into the colonisation of another world.

Per Aspera is a stunningly realistic "planet builder" in which you play as an AI tasked with terraforming Mars. Although its pace is sometimes slow, it is an extremely educational game with a surprisingly deep and touching story.

A smart, sprawling city builder that explores the cost of humanity's need to conquer through the mind of an AI, blurring the line between duty and morality. It requires some patience, but its quiet chills are unique in the genre.

Per Aspera offers a surprisingly emotional narrative that explores the thought process of an evolving AI programmed to assist humans in colonizing Mars. The symbiotic gameloop of creating structures and growing your presence on the surface while hitting key milestones is cathartic. I was easily immersed in this experience, but only after some trial and error trying to understand how it all worked due to a limited tutorial.

Per Aspera has a wealth of content on offer. The game is incredibly captivating, and you’ll easily get sucked into it for hours on end thanks to the story driven content. It’s a sci-fi city-builder with a narrative that grabs you and keeps you going even if there are some cliched or predictable elements to it. We just really wish that it didn’t feel so rough around the edges. There’s a sandbox mode in the game too but playing the campaign is what makes it shine. Per Aspera comes highly recommended from us but please bear in mind that you will most likely struggle towards the later stages of the game (10 hours or more into it) and there’s going to be a lot of waiting and frustration in concluding the story. We’re hoping that the developers address this sooner rather than later.

Per Aspera is a gameplay-centric affair that doesn’t excel through impressive visuals, but is extremely easy to get lost in. It’s not as deep as other simulations, but that’s exactly why it gets away with a tutorial that is too brief and why it’s such a good game to play once you’re done with something like Mars Horizon. If you’re a fan of the genre and enjoy space exploration, this one is happy to gobble up many hours of your time.

The level of detail Per Aspera provides for players, as well as pleasing visuals, voice acting, and storylines, are what really makes the Martian city simulator worth playing. Per Aspera’s gameplay experience could be improved upon with a clearer tutorial, objectives, and less complicated data collection, but what's here is enough to make it a compelling experience nonetheless. Certainly, anyone with city building experience looking for more will be quite pleased, but those new to the genre still might find something of value in Per Aspera's take on a tried-and-true archetype.
