This game did truly surprise me with its depth and creativity. For the first hour, it feels like a Pokemon-style game but without the freedom of catching as many creatures as you want. After that initial hour, the game really starts to open up, you have so much to upgrade from runes to adding new abilities to your creatures, the levels are split up into small event runs and you can choose what to do and where to go whenever you want, each will say the type of enemy and loot you can find so it does help with crafting, etc. It’s still hard to get my head around the fact your actual character doesn’t do any attacks and the way in which you capture is unique but very fiddly and stressful. All said it’s a game that has you thinking you have seen it all but you really haven’t and you get another dollop of content. I found myself doing run after run just to build up fragments, cash, and exp. Honestly, don’t let the visuals or general descriptions put you off, Adore is an adventure game like no other and whilst it takes some time and work to get the most out of it, the gameplay more than holds up.

It may be a little uneven, but Adore nonetheless stands out from the pack as an innovative new entry in the monster-catching RPG subgenre. The fast-paced combat, detailed team customization, and high level of replayability all make this one easy to recommend, though we say this with the qualifier that performance could be better and the gameplay loop can get pretty grindy. All the same, we’d give this one a recommendation to anyone looking for an interesting new monster catcher — it’s a welcome addition to the genre and we hope to see its ideas further explored in future games.

Adore is simple by design but this means enjoyment is spread more thinly the longer you play. Its depth of customisation options and range of items to acquire will keep your interest for a while, but before long Adore can feel like a little bit of a grind.

I enjoyed Adore for the things that it did differently with its creature collecting and real-time combat, I could have done without the roguelike systems. But even with that going against it I still had a great time playing Adore, collecting creatures, theory crafting for that perfect team and the combat system still has its hooks in me, despite the overused roguelike system.

Despite its flaws, Adore manages to carve out a distinctive niche in the creature collecting landscape, so if you’re seeking a unique take on the genre and are willing to overlook certain shortcomings, this could be an adventure worth embarking on. While it may not achieve the level of adoration it aspires to, it still holds a certain allure that sets it apart from the crowd.

Ultimately, Adore offers good ideas, trying to combine ARPG with monster collection, but ultimately doesn’t play them as well as I’d hoped especially as a roguelike. Still, there are a few reasons to like this game, just not enough to ‘Adore’ it.

While the unique monster-taming dungeon-crawling crossover gameplay that occupies much of Adore is surprisingly engaging, a lack of character and a bendy difficulty curve stop it from reaching its potential heights.

The concept of Adore is great and would really fill a gap in the monster collecting market, but the actual game just isn’t much fun to play. Alongside some performance issues on Switch and a repetitive soundtrack, there’s just not a whole lot to recommend here, and it’s a real shame because I really wanted to fall in love with Adore.
